No need for CBI probe, Govt tells High Court

The State Government today informed the High Court that at this stage it does not feel it necessary to refer the case about alleged police-drug dealers nexus to an independent agency like CBI.
The Public Prosecutor Carlos Ferreira, appearing on behalf of the Crime Branch which is currently investigating the alleged police-drug dealers nexus, made the statement after taking instructions from the Government.
However, he also told the Court he would make a statement on the next date of hearing on Wednesday whether investigation will be handed over to a senior officer or any other independent agency.
The Court was hearing a bail application moved by the suspended police inspector Ashish Shirodkar.
The Court reserved its order on the bail application for Wednesday after both parties concluded their arguments.
During the last date of hearing the Vacation Bench of Justice N A Britto had sought to know if the Government had any plans to hand over investigation to an independent agency.
The Crime Branch today submitted a statement to substantiate its claim that suspended cop had links with drug dealers such as Atala and Dudu.
It also submitted a letter containing list of items which were in stock available for destruction. In 2006, the NDPS Court Mapusa had ordered Drugs Destruction Committee (DDC) to destroy certain quantity of drugs. However, DDC did not execute the court order.
