PANJIM, MAY 26
While Crime Branch has not made any significant progress in its investigation in the alleged police-drug dealers nexus, the Bombay High Court at Goa on Wednesday asked the State Government whether it would consider handing over the investigation to a specialised agency like CBI.
The vacation Bench of Justice N A Britto put forth the question while hearing a bail application moved by suspended police inspector Ashish Shirodkar. The police officer was among the first arrested by the Crime Branch for his alleged nexus with the drug dealer Atala.
The Court said the case has wide ramification and sought to know whether the Government intends to hand over the investigation to CBI. The Public Prosecutor Carlos Ferreira who appeared on behalf of the State Government has been asked to take instruction from the Government.
The Opposition BJP has already lashed out at the Government for its “causal approach” in investigating the police-drug nexus.
