CALANGUTE, MAY 26 Calangute Police on Wednesday arrested three persons in connection with the assault of Police Constable Mahabaleshwar Eknath Sawant attached to Anti Narcotic Cell (ANC).

Calangute Police on Wednesday arrested three persons in connection with the assault of Police Constable Mahabaleshwar Eknath Sawant attached to Anti Narcotic Cell (ANC).
Calangute police have identified the accused as Cookie Marcelo Rodrigues (43) of Margao, but residing at Calangute, Sandeep Kumar Bhuniya (18) of West Bengal, but residing at Calangute and Janaya John (28) of Hyderabad, residing at Calangute. One accused is reported to be absconding.
Police informed that all the accused have been booked under Sections 341, 333, 307 read with 34 IPC and have been remanded to seven days police custody.
Police further informed that the Sections were altered immediately on receipt of medical report late Tuesday evening stating grievous injury to the ANC constable and a search to nab the accused began.
However, the accused evaded arrest Tuesday night, but were finally trapped on Wednesday by Calangute police team led by PSI Sherif Jacques, Pramod Poll, Datta Shirodker, Akshay Tirodkar, Rupesh Kandolkar, Waman Naik, Datta Sawant and Pramod Pollji.
Earlier in the day, Calangute police recorded Police Constable Sawant’s statement, where he stated that he was wrongfully restrained by Cookie and his staff. He also stated that he was hit on the nose with a hockey stick by John.
It may be recalled that Constable Sawant was severely assaulted at Umtta-Vaddo, Calangute, when he along with an informer reportedly went to a shack to verify details about drug peddling activities at the beach.
Police Constable Sawant suffered grievous injuries and was rushed to a private hospital where he is recovering. His condition is reported to be stable. PSI Sherif Jacques is investigating the case.
