Cops issue ATM security advisory

PANJIM: In view of several incidents of ATM skimming reported in different parts of Goa, the State police issued a fresh advisory to banks in an attempt to ensure genuine ATM customers are not victims of fraud.
“The bank officials should depute responsible personnel to check the ATM machine twice in the morning and evening to see if the blinking light is hidden at the card slot and if there is a skimmer fitted on top of the card slot. They should also check if any spy cameras are placed anywhere, especially above the keypad of the ATM machine,” the advisory issued by Inspector General of Police Jaspal Singh states.
Another security measure advises banks that private agencies to which the ATM operations are outsourced should pay attention to the ATM machine while loading the cash and ensure there is no cloning device added to the card reader slot. Singh said that banks must ensure cloning proof ATM machines are installed.
“Additional CCTV cameras with night vision facility should be installed outside the ATM. The feed of CCTV cameras should be preserved for at least one month,” he further said while also advising bank customers to cover the PIN pad while entering the PIN.
Banks are also recommended to deploy security guards round the clock, armed with fire arm/lathi, torch, etc.
