PANJIM: Goa Police is contemplating departmental action against the officers who had travelled on flights tickets sponsored by the person accused of framing a Mumbai-based businessman in a fake rape case.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jaspal Singh in an affidavit filed before the High Court of Bombay at Goa, has submitted that the police personnel attached to Anjuna Police Station in 2016 had travelled to Mumbai from Goa on air tickets sponsored by the accused Anil Jaisinghani.
The petitioner in the present case, Kishore Keswani, has contended that police conspired with the accused Jaisinghani and co-accused Tulika Katare in framing him in the fake rape case. He had pointed out that the personnel travelled by air-tickets sponsored by the accused and also remained in touch with the accused.
However, backing his personnel on the intent of travelling on the sponsored tickets, the IGP submitted that the then police inspector had received a call informing that Keswani was in Mumbai and would escape within the next 24 hours. The caller was Jaisinghani who claimed to be the relative of the victim in the fake rape case.
Stating the case needed speedy action, the IGP has submitted that in good faith and in order to avoid delay, the personnel agreed to travel on the sponsored tickets. However, when the Goa Police arrived in Mumbai it was learnt that there were property disputes going on between Jaisinghani and Keswani and therefore the police did not arrest Keswani.
The IGP has further submitted that his officers did not have any mala fide intention against the petitioner (Keswani).
Acknowledging that it is improper for the police to travel at the behest of private person, the IGP has submitted to the High Court that the police are contemplating departmental action against the personnel involved in the case.
