Coronavirus: Govt asks public attending Shigmo parades to remain vigilant

The State has approved the organisation of Shigmo float parades at 16 various locations from March 10 to March 24, which is attended by huge crowds; Appeals to locals to take precautionary measures

PANJIM: In wake of coronavirus outbreak in different parts of India, Goa Government has issued advisory to its public, attending Shigmo float parade, to be more vigilant in respect of the tourists, arriving in the State. 

In an advisory issued on Friday, the government has said that it has approved the organisation of Shigmo float parades 2020 at the 16 various locations from March 10 to March 24, which is attended by huge crowds. 

“Coronavirus, which was initially reported in China has been spreading rapidly all over the world and has affected more than 100 countries,” it added.

“The general public is therefore directed to take all necessary precautions to prevent and contain the virus and be extra vigilant in respect of the tourists, arriving in the State from different countries and strictly adhere to the Advisories by the Government from time to time,” the advisory mentioned. 

Meanwhile, amidst coronavirus fear, the Panjim Shigmotsav Samiti has decided to go ahead with its schedule traditional float parade in the city on Saturday. 

The Samiti along with Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) and traffic police on Friday held a meeting with all the participating groups for the parade. Directions have been issued to ensure that the parade culminates at 10.00pm, owing to the election model code of conduct, which is currently in force. 

Speaking to media persons post meeting, CCP Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues said that Union Ministry for Health and the State government have issued an advisory on the precautions to be maintained in wake of coronavirus outbreak. 

“We would urge all those participating in the parade, including the spectators, to take utmost care,” he said. 

Rodrigues added that the meeting was basically called to inform the participants that there will be no compromise on the parade’s timing, which will begin sharp at 4.30 pm and end before 10.00pm as per the directions of the State Election Commission. 

“We are in the middle of model code of conduct and hence we have to abide by the timing. “We will not allow any violation of the code,” he said. 

The float parade will be held on the traditional route along 18June road and will conclude at Azad Maidan.
