MARGAO: The garbage sentinel scheme, which was meant to solve problems, has only attracted more problems with the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), the urban local body that launched it, on the back foot following complaints from citizens and their own councillors.
A section of councilors have now claimed that they were not taken into confidence and have blamed the Chief Officer (CO) over the problems that have surfaced.
It maybe recalled that MMC Chairperson Babita Angle, who is on a tour abroad, had handed over charge to Vice-chairperson Tito Cardozo. The CO along with the acting chairperson had launched the scheme, albeit with the limited participation of other councillors.
Councillor Raju Shirodkar echoed the sentiments of the irked councillors who had been kept in the dark.
He pointed out that the same had to be deliberated at length prior to it being launched. “This should have been placed before the council and it should have been finalised after a debate on the same was held,” he added.
“The reward for the sentinel reporting garbage dumping will be paid from municipal coffers,” complained another group councillors while reiterating their grievance that it was not discussed at the council meeting earlier.
“The law and order situation of Margao will go haywire if this scheme continues. Instead of solving the garbage problem of Margao, they are interested in sentinel” said BJP councillor Ketan Kurtarkar
Even Margao MLA Digambar Kamat stated that he was informed by the CO, only day prior to the scheme being launched.
