PANJIM: In an attempt to increase tourist footfalls in the hinterland, Goa Tourism Development Corporation’s (GTDC) much-awaited project – bungee jumping tower – is expected to come up near Mayem lake by September-end.
GTDC chairman Nilesh Cabral said the 56-metre high tower will be the second highest in the country.
Jumpin Adventure Pvt Ltd, which emerged the lowest bidder, was last year selected to set up the project. It had paid Rs 10 lakh as a bank guarantee and has floated a special purpose vehicle (SPV) called Extreme Adventure, which will execute the agreement with GTDC.
It is learnt that land measuring 100sqm has been allotted for the purpose for which an NOC has already been obtained from Goa Coastal Management Authority (GCZMA).
Meanwhile, Mayem villages petitioned Tourism Minister Manohar Azgaonkar regarding rehabilitation of the stalls at the parking space in the vicinity of Mayem lake. The villagers complained that GTDC failed to live up to its assurance to rehabilitate the displaced stall operators from the vicinity.
“Prior to undertaking the project, GTDC requested to vacate the place and remove the stalls. It promised to rehabilitate the stall owners, who have this business as their only source of income. However, the authorities have almost completed the development project and beautification of the lake but ignored our grievances. Kindly take the matter on priority and ensure matter is resolved,” the villagers stated.
