MARGAO: Alleging that there is an unwarranted wastage of a huge amount over Rs 5 crore of public funds on treatment of accumulated waste at Sonsoddo, Margao, the Shadow Council for Margao (SCM) urged the Chief Secretary (CS) to intervene into the matter so that there should not be politics in waste management.

SCM Convenor Savio Coutinho said that they have written a letter to the CS in this regard. A copy has been also marked to the Directorate of Municipal Administration and Secretary, Urban Development.
He said that they are in deep anguish to state that they are very much disappointed over the intentions of the government to spend huge amounts of public money on the treatment of the waste accumulated at Sonsoddo. A similar exercise was carried out in June 2020, where Rs 85.19 lakh was spent to bio-remediation waste from the Sonsoddo plant.
“After losing faith in the Margao Municipal Council, through various correspondences to you, we tried to highlight the criminal wastage of public funds, which didn’t deliver success either, in the waste management system of MMC. But all our attempts finally proved to be like running water on a duck’s back,” the SCM further said.
The council also added that finally 10,000 tonnes of accumulated waste (ie. equivalent to 25 to 30 thousand cubic metres @Rs 1,850 per cu.m.), means a big fat contract worth over Rs 5 crore, that too without a fresh tender process. This scheme would definitely be more attractive than any other economic process.
