A proposal mooted by neighbouring Assolna VP to lift waste generated in the village has not found favour with the Cuncolim Municipality.
Desai said the City Fathers were sceptical about accepting waste generated outside the municipal jurisdiction as the plant is set up to treat only Cuncolim waste; hence, the Assolna proposal was rejected. Incidentally, the Cuncolim plant is underutilised for want of sufficient waste. While the plant has a capacity to treat 10 metric tons of waste, Cuncolim Municipal area generates only 5-6 tons a day. Desai admitted that the Civic body could have earned revenue by accepting waste from neighbouring panchayats to foot the growing cost of waste segregation and treatment.
Assolna Deputy Sarpanch Savio Ferreira said the VP had knocked on the doors of CMC since it was facing problems to dispose off the waste generated in Assolna. Regarding the rejection of the proposal by CMC, he said that the Village Panchayat of Assolna is still awaiting a formal communication from the Cuncolim civic body on its proposal.
