CORTALIM: Cash and gold ornaments worth about Rs 2.50 lakh were stolen after a house was burgled at Gaucarwado in Curca under Agassaim Police Station.
The incident occurred when the owners of the house, Onette and Santan Afonso, had on Sunday morning visited the house of their daughter at Church Street Cortalim for a function. After spending the night, they arrived on Monday morning only to see their house burgled.
“I dropped by wife at Pilar and I proceeded home only to see the front door open. After I entered the house, I saw cupboards open and later found that gold and cash were stolen,” Santan told Herald.
According to Santan, four bangles, earrings, rings, wrist watches and cash of Rs 8,000 were stolen by the burglars, who effected entry after breaking the front door frame.
He suspected that after committing the crime, the burglars escaped through the back grill door of the kitchen after breaking the lock.
Later, Agassaim Police Inspector Gad visited the site and sniffer dog was pressed into service and finger prints taken.
Neighbours however suspected that it could be handiwork of persons who were in the know since the inmates were not in the house only for one day. They also alleged that there was no police patrolling.
When contacted, St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh said the police had become very docile. “There are lot of nefarious activities including gambling but nothing is being done to put an end,” Wagh told Herald.
