QUEPEM: Curchorem Fire Station on Monday informed that around 70 emergency calls were registered as Cyclone Tauktae disrupted normal life in Quepem and Sanguem Talukas, on Sunday.
The cyclone hit many parts of Quepem, Curchorem, Sanguem and Dharbandora, which come under the jurisdiction of Curchorem Fire Station, informed fire fighter Sanjay Talekar.
“The cyclone uprooted many trees and damaged many houses. Around 70 calls were registered from Quepem, Sanguem and Dharbandora areas and all of them were completed. No casualties were reported,” said Sanjay.
As expected, Sunday was the tough day for Curchorem fire fighters because they had to cover large areas and complete as many calls possible. In that, they even had to also face the criticism from some people for not attending their calls first. In the process, one fire tender rescue vehicle was broken down in the afternoon and only one vehicle was working for the rest of day and that was the talking point for the rest of the day.
According to the sources, as the inbuilt generator of fire fighter vehicle is not working for the last eight months, the fire personnel had to use portable generator to cut the trees. As we understand that it is very tough situation during such period but it is also important that the vehicles should be in good condition because the Curchorem Fire Station has the responsibilities of three talukas, the sources added.
About the condition of vehicle, Curchorem Fire Station In Charge Shailesh Gawade, said it broke down in the evening when they went for call at Maruthigad. Monday morning it was repaired.
