MARGAO: Dumping of waste on the roadside near Sonsodo dump yard not only continues unabated despite warning from the people of Curtorim and Village panchayat of Raia, but also the waste is being set on fire, causing air pollution in the area and nuisance for the locals.
Earlier, outgoing Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and even the village panchayat of Raia had raised this issue and warned of strict action against anyone found dumping waste on the roadside leading towards Curtorim and under the jurisdiction of Raia panchayat. Panchayat had even initiated a process to install CCTV cameras over here to monitor the offenders.
However, this mess has continued till date despite the panchayat workers lifting the waste in large quantities.
Panch member of Village panchayat Raia Mario D’Souza said panchayat workers are keeping a close eye on the situation. It is has been noticed that unknown culprits are noticed dumping the waste at night.
“Just two days ago our workers lifted nearly 50 garbage bags from the site,” he informed.
He further said that the installation of CCTV cameras will be carried out by end of December to catch the culprits.
Meanwhile, the locals have also alleged involvement of few MMC workers in burning the left-over waste of Margao feast fair, including the plastic waste, leading to air pollution.
Taking serious note of the issue the citizens of Margao have condemned the act and demanded action against the workers involved in burning the waste.
Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes has appealed the people not to set fire to the waste littered on roadside as it causes severe health and environmental hazard.
The CO has issued a note after citizens complained to the MMC upon sighting MMC staff and public openly setting fire to plastic and other waste after the stalls were removed after the fair near SGPDA grounds.
“I have set up an inquiry to investigate the matter. I have also directed concerned Supervisor to conduct inquiry into allegations regarding involvement of MMC staff and submit me the report. Culprit will be taken to task,” he said.
