MARGAO: A group of farmers who cultivate fields in Vaingondde and Ralloi Tollem have come forward to voice their concerns over alleged unfair practices and irregularities by the Tenants Association of Ralloi Tollem and Vaigonde in Curtorim.
A hearing was conducted at the Salcete Mamlatdar’s office on Wednesday, following a complaint filed by Minguel Fernandes, one of the affected farmers. The complaint primarily focused on objections raised regarding the appointment of government servants to the managing committee of the Tenants Association.
During the hearing, the farmers also raised concerns about discrepancies in the notice for the auction of fishing rights in Ralloi Tollem, scheduled for October 8, at 10.30 am.
Fernandes alleged that a select few individuals within the tenant’s association wield control over fishing rights and other decision-making processes, while sidelining the larger group of farmers.
Additionally, the farmers expressed dissatisfaction with the condition of their fields, which they claim have been damaged. The farmers pointed out that the Association had various opportunities to support them and ensure equal benefits for the entire farming community. However, they lamented that they are deliberately excluded, despite farming being their sole source of livelihood. Fernandes further noted that while the Mamlatdar’s office conducted an inspection of their fields, the farmers have yet to receive any compensation or assistance from the government.
