PANJIM: After causing havoc in Goa, Cyclone Tauktae, which intensified into an ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ early this morning, moved 500 kms away from the coast thus reducing its impact significantly over the State.

The Cyclone is very likely to reach the Gujarat this evening with gusts of up to 200 kmph. “The cyclone is very likely to cross the Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva in Bhavnagar district around the early morning of May 18,” IMD Goa incharge Rahul Menon said directing fishermen against venturing into sea during the period.
Gusty winds at a speed of 90-100 km per hour accompanied with extensive rains caused trail of destruction in Goa on Sunday. While two lost their lives, four people were injured. Nearly 700 electric poles while 500 trees were uprooted. 150 houses were damaged apart from huge agricultural and other losses.
Menon said the system has moved 500 kms away from Goa coast and its impact has reduced significantly since early morning of Monday. “However, widespread rainfall activities at isolated places are expected tonight,” he said.
The weather official informed that there are no rainfall warnings for the State for next five days from Tuesday.
He informed that the Panjim station reported the extreme rainfall condition on May 16, with 22 cms of rains followed by Old Goa with 19 cms and Margao with 17 cms.
The extreme severe cyclonic storm on Monday hit Maharashtra, wherein the wind speed of 120-140 kmph was reported.
