Daily waste piled at shed of treatment plant gives MMC a headache

MARGAO: As the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) faces challenges in meeting the deadline given by the High Court of clearing the legacy dump site at Sonsodo by February-end, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is saddled with difficulties with regarding to handling the daily waste that is dumped at the shed of the treatment plant.

Regarding the bioremediation work of the legacy dump, as per the report submitted by the contracting handling that work, 1.3 lakh cubic metres of legacy waste has been bioremediated while around 50,000 cubic meters were still left to be mined.

While GWMC is running against time to get that completed, it is facing issues on two other fronts. Large quantities of inert waste generated from the bioremediation work and the refuse derived fuel (RDF) are still lying at Sonsodo as it awaits transportation elsewhere. MMC has been tasked with finding a location for the shifting of the inert waste whereas the demand for RDF by cement factories in Karnataka has reduced.

Furthermore, the proposals worth Rs 14 cr of the GWMC and MMC about the treatment plant are awaiting approval from the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA).

These include hiring a contractor to run the treatment plant, refurbishing the shed at Sonsodo and repairing the approach roads. There is also the work of rebuilding the leachate tank to stop the flow onto the roads below.
