Former Australian cricketer David Warner has been charged with drink-driving after being stopped by police in Sydney over the weekend. The 39-year-old, who continues to play Twenty20 cricket for global franchises, was reportedly driving a van that stopped near a random testing site on Sunday.
Police officers approached Warner’s vehicle and conducted a breath test, which returned a positive result for alcohol, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). He was arrested on the spot and taken to a local police station, where he was formally charged with mid-range drink-driving. Warner is scheduled to appear in court on May 7.

Warner retired from international cricket in 2024, finishing his career with 8,786 runs from 112 Tests. Despite retiring from Tests, he remains active in the T20 circuit, recently playing for the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League. In the past, he has represented Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
The left-handed opener made his T20 and ODI debuts for Australia in January 2009 and played his last Test in January 2024 against Pakistan, concluding a 13-year career at the highest level. Police statements outlined the incident without initially naming Warner.
