MARGAO: Pledging their support to Davorlim Sarpanch Flancy Gomes decried the no confidence motion tabled against her, a group of 30 villagers on Sunday asked the new sarpanch to spell out her development plans for the village.
Around 30 villagers gathered at the panchayat this morning where an informal meeting of the panchayat body was scheduled to discuss matters pertaining to inviting the chief minister to the village to explain the proposed education hub in the village as was discussed at the last gram sabha held on 19th November.
The villagers led by Andrew Rebello asked the Sarpanch why only three panchayat members were present and when the Sarpanch said she did not know the reason, they retorted that while the people elect the panchayat members, once elected they do what they wish even if it is against the wishes of the people.
“We totally support you as you have worked keeping in mind the wishes of the people and taking the people into confidence,” said Andrew adding that all matters concerning the village including housing projects were placed before the gram sabha for the first time.
Johnson Fernandes also concurred and said the Sarpanch was taking people into confidence and demanded to know whether she was being dethroned because of that. The villagers alleged that Flancy was sought to be removed by those who wanted to indulge in corrupt practices as she was honest and not corrupt.
In the 11 member panchayat eight persons who were seen as belonging to ex-MLA Avertano Furtado’s panel were elected and three panchas namely Francisco Dias, Sahar Shaikh and Paresh Naik were seen to be the opposition.
However, the no confidence motion dated 23rd November 2017 was signed by eight members of the panchayat including the three who were believed to be opposition panchas along with the Deputy Sarpanch Deepak Mangalam.
Sarpanch Flancy Gomes along with panchayat members Francisco Colaco and Gracy Fernandes are now left in the opposition when the no confidence motion will be taken up for discussion at 11 am on December 6.
Villager Wilma Colaco alleged the movers of the no confidence motion to be supporters of those residing in buildings causing the garbage menace in the village and said they were against the local population.
It is believed that the no confidence motion is a result of the attack launched against the Deputy Sarpanch Deepak Mangalam by one of the villager Johnson Fernandes at the 19th November gram sabha that had caused uproarious scenes and nearly resulted in the gram sabha being adjourned.
