Death threat against PM Modi ahead of Australia visit under AFP investigation

Australian authorities have launched an investigation into an online death threat directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi just days before his scheduled visit to Melbourne on July 9. According to Australian media reports, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has identified an IP address linked to the threatening social media comment and is examining the circumstances surrounding the post.

The threat reportedly appeared beneath a Facebook post promoting the “Melbourne Meets Modi” community event, which is set to be held at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium during the Prime Minister’s visit. The comment, allegedly posted from an account named “Abu Mustafa,” warned that “the roof tops of the stadium better close during the event or he will be coming to Australia for his death.”

According to The Australia Today, the matter was referred to the AFP on the same day the comment surfaced online. Investigators are now assessing whether the post constitutes a criminal offence under Australian law. While media reports claim the IP address associated with the account has been identified, the AFP has not issued any official statement regarding the ongoing investigation.

Security agencies in Australia are known to treat threats against visiting heads of government with utmost seriousness. Such high-profile visits generally involve coordinated security arrangements by the Australian Federal Police, state police forces and specialist protection units to ensure the safety of dignitaries.

Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit Australia for bilateral meetings and public engagements, including the “Melbourne Meets Modi” event, which is anticipated to draw a large gathering of members of the Indian diaspora.

Authorities have not indicated whether the threat will affect the Prime Minister’s travel schedule or planned public appearances. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials continuing to examine the origin and intent behind the online message while monitoring the security situation ahead of the visit.
