Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal faced criticism on social media following his comments on the nationwide gig workers’ strike held on December 31, with delivery partners and users accusing him of overlooking core issues related to pay, safety and working conditions. The criticism followed the second phase of the strike on New Year’s Eve.
In a post on X, Goyal said Blinkit’s 10-minute delivery promise was made possible by the density of stores located close to residential areas, and not by pressuring delivery partners to rush. However, several delivery workers told The Indian Express that the speed of delivery was not their primary concern.

Ashok (name changed), a delivery worker in his early fifties who participated in both phases of the strike, said per-order payouts had steadily declined over the years. “Earlier we earned around Rs 50 per order. It later dropped to Rs 25, and now in many cases it is close to Rs 12,” he said, adding that workers are forced to take more orders to meet daily income targets.
