VASCO: Coming to the rescue of residents whose dwellings face demolition at Baina, the Parish Council of Our Lady of Candelaria Church, Baina has urged politicians and bureaucrats to intervene and postpone the demolition of 121 structures until after the monsoon. The council has also appealed to the leaders to rehabilitate the traditional fishermen who would be affected by the demolition.
A memorandum signed by about 100 people, has also been submitted to Power Minister and Mormugao MLA Milind Naik, Forest and Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar and to Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority member secretary.
“It is learnt that about 121 structures at Baina beach will be demolished after June 10. Since the area comes under the parish of Our Lady of Candelaria Church, the members of the parish council have made a request to State leaders and the concerned department officials to intervene and postpone the demolition to a convenient date after the monsoon, purely on humanitarian grounds,” the Parish Priest Fr Vital Miranda said. He added, “In the past too structures at Baina beach were demolished during the monsoon due to which children and elderly persons had to face severe hardships. The worst affected would be school children as the time period is too short for residents to look out for accommodation.”
