PANJIM: With just about a month to go to the October 25 municipal polls, the process of delimitation and reservation of wards is expected to be completed by Tuesday, wherein 33% wards will be set aside for women, 27% for OBCs and STs and SCs based on the population in respective wards.
DMA Elvis Gomes said that the delimitation and reservation process, which is likely be completed by Tuesday, will be sent for govt nod before being notified.
Gomes said that the reservation would be balanced, with 50% of the wards being reserved and the other 50% under general category. “Of the 33% women reservation, certain number would be under general category,” he said.
Apart from ward reservations, sources said that over 50 percent of councils may have women as its chairpersons. As per recent notification, 27% seats would be reserved for OBCs, Gomes said adding that the reservation for ST and SC would be based on their population in the respective wards.
The elections to municipal councils of Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Bicholim, Cuncolim, Curchorem, Quepem, Canacona, Sanguem, Pernem and Valpoi are due, consequent upon their term expiring on November 11, 2015.
The increased number of municipal wards has already been notified. As per the notification, the ward strength of Mormugao Municipal Council and Margao Municipal Council has been increased to 25. These are ‘A’ Class municipalities with a population close to 1 lakh each.
Under ‘B’ Class municipalities, Mapusa will have 20 wards, while Bicholim and Cuncolim will have 12 wards each.
The ward strength of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council will be 14, while Quepem will have 11 wards and Canacona, Sanguem, Pernem and Valpoi will have 10 wards each.
