PONDA: The incident has sparked off outrage in the village and surrounding areas, with growing demands to ban labourers from residing in industrial estates.
“Heavy fines should be levied on those companies providing rooms to workers in the factory premises. Labourers have been residing in rooms in factories at the industrial estates in Kundaim and Marcaim and this is illegal. The panchayat and the IDC should take immediate action to stop this,” said Krishna Naik from Bandora. Ponda-based social worker Charanjeet Sapre also stated that the government should immediately take measures and prevent workers from staying in rooms in the factory premises. “Police should also keep a record of those workers working in industrial estates. The companies should provide accommodation to workers in residential areas outside the industrial estates,” said Sapre.
“The companies should also arrange for a female caretaker to look after the children of male and female workers employed in industrial estates. The IDC and government should act promptly in the matter,” demanded Sapre.
