After being absent for India’s first two matches in the 2023 World Cup against Australia and Afghanistan, Shubman Gill is likely to miss the crucial clash against Pakistan this Saturday as he continues to recover from dengue fever. The BCCI finally addressed Gill’s condition on Monday and revealed that the 24-year-old did not accompany the team to Delhi, where India is scheduled to play Afghanistan on Wednesday. Gill had been hospitalized in Chennai due to a drop in his platelet count but was discharged on Monday evening. However, his availability for the highly-anticipated World Cup match against Pakistan on October 14 remains uncertain.
Gill’s low platelet count raised concerns, prompting medical experts to recommend treatment and advise against air travel.

The BCCI confirmed that Gill would not travel to Delhi and would continue to receive medical supervision in Chennai. The official statement from the BCCI read, “Team India batsman Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on October 9, 2023. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.”
In Gill’s absence, Ishan Kishan is expected to partner with Rohit Sharma as the opening pair. In the previous match against Australia, both openers failed to make an impact, but India managed to secure a victory thanks to strong performances from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.
