Despite lockdown, Netravali youth continues feeding stray dogs

SANGUEM: Since the lockdown, most of us are trying hard to find food for ourselves, one man in the remote Netravali village of Sanguem Taluka is working hard since day one of the lockdown in feeding stray dogs.

The young man from Netravali is not only feeding the stray dogs in his village and taluka, but also far beyond their boundaries.

Despite the many odds, Amit Naik has been feeding the strays without any complaints since day one of the lockdown.

Naik himself has around 80 dogs at his home in Netravali village. He does not like seeing a stray dog being starved and whenever he sees a stray dog without food, he would take the dog home and this ultimately made him the proud owner of around 80 dogs which he takes care of at home.

Ever since the government announced the Janata Curfew, Naik had sleepless nights as thoughts of stray dogs going without food was disturbing him.

Naik woke up early in the morning as usual and while preparing the feed for his dogs, prepared additional feed which he later loaded in his SUV and proceeded to various destinations in South Goa to serve the stray dogs.

Speaking to Herald, Naik informed that on March 25, with the help of a local boy, he fed around 170 dogs in South Goa before the feed got over. Naik informed that he prepared the feed comprising of chicken liver and rice in the early morning hours and set for his journey in the afternoon hours.

“We served the dogs all around the SGPDA market, Margao Railway Station and at other prominent places in South Goa throughout the afternoon session till the feed got over. We reached home at around 7.30 pm after feeding around 170 dogs,” Amit informed.

While Naik would love to serve more dogs, financial constraints has been deterring him from going ahead. However, some generous people have extended financial help and this helped him to a great extent in going ahead.

Naik informed that he has been getting calls from many places in South Goa to feed the dogs in their neighbourhood but financial resources deters him from going on a mass scale.

Naik planned to visit Colva and its neighbouring villages on Sunday evening and he will be seen feeding stray dogs in other villages in the days to come.

Commenting on the ongoing curfew, Naik said that he faces little difficulty over his chosen job in convincing police at every point. Naik informed that he has applied to the Sanguem Deputy Collector for pass and he is likely to get it soon.
