PONDA: A Dharbandora resident was seriously injured in a leopard attack on Thursday.
According to locals, on Thursday morning Jayram Mahadev Gaonkar (50) had gone to guard his bagayat farm at Davkon in Dharbandora, located one km away from his residence. He had gone with his five domestic dogs.
At around 11 am, while resting, Gaonkar was awoken by the loud barking of his dogs that were fighting off a leopard that was trying to kill them for food. Sensing the danger, Gaonkar tried to scare off the wildcat with a stick. However, he was mowed down by the leopard which inflicted deep wounds on his head, hands and legs and he began shouting for help. Some local who heard his cry for help rushed to the place and chased off the wildcat.
Thereafter, the locals rushed Gaonkar to the Public Health Center at Tisk and later to Ponda Sub District hospital and then to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim.
In the past, there have been several incidents of bison attacks on farmers guarding their farm and bagayats in the taluka.
