Dhirios in Salcete escape authorities’ attention

COLVA: In yet another violation of the court rulings, the banned dhirios (bullfights) once again took place in Salcete’s coastal belt on Thursday escaping the attention of the law enforcement authorities.

Colva PSI Melito Fernandes said, “Around 4 pm, the Colva Police received phone calls informing about dhirios being organised near a bungalow at Majorda and near the Varca church. However, by the time the police vehicles reached the tow sites within 5-10 minutes, we saw a large crowd slowly dispersing. We couldn’t find any bullfighting activity so no complaints were registered nor was anyone detained.”

Interestingly, this is the third instance of the illegal dhirios being organised in the Salcete’s coastal belt this month as reliable sources inform Herald that dhirios were recently staged at Seraulim and Benaulim. It is learnt that the Colva Police once again reached the Seraulim site late having allegedly received a phone call from a politician’s kin requesting leniency to the illegal sport. In the Benaulim incident on January 19, Joel Colaco and Vinay Fernandes were arrested and later released after a complaint was lodged with the Colva police, informed sources.

It may be recalled that despite the Bombay High Court at Goa banning dhirios, the clandestine bullfighting activity continues with political patronage being bestowed upon the organisers.
