The Department of Fire and Services in Goa operates under the motto “we serve to save.”, said Director Nitin Raikar, Director of Fire and Emergency Services. He further said that the Goa Fire and Emergency Training Center is recognized as a regional service center by the Minister of Home Affairs in India, and the department has seen improved performance in saving lives and properties due to technological advancements.
In the financial year 2023, the fire service station received 9020 calls and successfully saved 206 human lives and 739 animal lives. The department’s efforts have been acknowledged by the Minister of Home Affairs, who recognized them as a regional service center, he added.
Giving more details he said that, to enhance their capabilities, a batch of 30 individuals has been recruited for training in Nagpur. Additionally, 400 trained Apada Mitra and Apda Sakhi have been employed.
In the National Fire Service Games held in Gujarat in 2024, fire personnel from Goa won a total of 19 medals, including 7 gold, 9 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Efforts are underway to renovate fire stations in Panaji, Valpoi, Bicholim, and Vasco, with plans for inauguration in the current financial year. The Cancona fire station is also proposed to be relocated to its permanent station at the Goa Housing Board, pending government approval.
He requested authorities to review and grant the risk allowance for all firefighters, of the 7th pay commission which has been recommended.
A rescue drill was performed at the Fire Force Headquarters, and a group was also present at the function.
