District Collector urged to tackle issues of pollution, safety concerns of scrapyards

MARGAO: South Goa District Collector, Asvin Chandru, has been urged to take action against the problem of scrapyards and the pollution they cause in the district. The issue was raised at a recent bi-annual coordination review meeting on vector-borne diseases. According to GOACAN convenor, Roland Martins, scrapyards were found operating without permission during recent inspections.

Martins suggested that all scrapyards should be relocated to isolated sheds in various industrial estates, so that the problems associated with scrap material could be contained and monitored more efficiently. He also appealed to the State government to formulate a policy on how to handle this issue.

The situation at the industrial estates of Sao Jose De Areal and Cuncolim was highlighted during the meeting, and the potential for scrapyards to be a source of mosquito breeding sites was also discussed.

Martins pointed out that there had been a scheme in place in the past which had received some response from scrapyards, but had failed to take off. He requested that the District Collector investigate this scheme and expedite the necessary processes.

The Collector has given assurances that he will follow up on the matter.
