The agency claims to have collected over 1,42,930 kgs of waste to later transported it to Saligao waste management plant since December 17, 2016 when it was assigned the project.
Confirming the agency is assisting Goa government on a temporary basis, Managing Director Ankit Somani said the work is diligently carried out by its workers and supervisors.
“We are assisting the State government by clearing the garbage on the beaches. Approximately 1,42,930 kg of garbage has been collected from the day we started the work till date. Tractors are being placed at the beaches to collect garbage from the shacks and bins which are being segregated,” he told reporters during a demonstration at Miramar beach on Friday evening.
As New Year celebrations saw beaches littered with large amounts of garbage, Somani stated its employees stepped up efforts and collected an approximate 33,000kg of garbage between January 1 and 5, 2017. “The collection of the garbage takes place between 9am to 6pm. Workers are given gloves, masks and safety jackets as a part of their safety,” he informed.
The agency has employed around 222 persons on a daily basis to clear the garbage from the beaches in both the districts. The State Government had cancelled the beach cleaning contract with the previous agencies following violations of contract term and allegations of scam. The Drishti Lifesaving Services that has recruited lifeguards along the beaches was thereafter approached to support the initiative. The agency has an existing framework which includes infrastructure and management capability to effectively carry out the exercise along the beaches.
