Little knowledge of roads along with a fair portion of alcohol proved costly for a driver when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) went off the road at the newly built bridge at St Jacinto on Friday night.
According to reports, the incident took place as a KSRTC driver was driving an empty bus (KA-29-F-890) from Vasco to the KTC depot at Panjim for repairs.
He spotted the newly built bridge at St Jacinto Island and assuming it to be a shortcut to Panjim, he turned to proceed along the bridge.
However, some people who had come for a night stroll noticed the bus and alerted the driver of his mistake.
“The driver told us that he was proceeding towards Panjim as someone had told him that the bridge at St Jacinto was a shortcut,” said one Leslie.
“The driver was drunk and while reversing, the bus went off the road and fell into a roadside trench.” The driver, however, escaped unhurt.
The bus was scheduled to proceed from Vasco to Hungunda via Hubli on Saturday morning, but the driver noticed some problem with the brakes and decided to take the bus for repairs to Panjim on Friday night.
