A 49-year-old man from Mahakhazan in Dhargal, Pernem, was killed in a horrific road ac cident at Goa Velha late on Thursday night after his motorcycle was allegedly hit by a self-drive rental car driven by a 16-year old minor under the influ ence of alcohol.
The deceased has been identified as Janardhan Tu karam Harmalkar (49), a resident of Mahakhazan, Dhargal. According to the police, the accident occurred at around 10.51 pm on July 9 near the United Colors of Benetton showroom on the NH-66 highway at Goa Vel ha, under the jurisdiction of Agacaim Police Station. Police said the minor was allegedly driving the self-drive commercial rent al car from Bambolim to wards Margao in a rash and negligent manner when he rammed into Harmalkar’s motorcycle before losing control and crashing into a streetlight pole.
The im pact of the collision left the motorcycle mangled and caused extensive damage to the rental car. Harmalkar suffered grievous injuries and was rushed to Goa Med ical College and Hospital, Bambolim, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Police have booked Abdul Aziz Khan of Valpoi for allegedly allowing the minor to drive the self drive rental vehicle. The 16-year-old has also been booked for allegedly driving under the in fluence of alcohol and causing the fatal accident. A case has been registered under Sections 125, 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya San hita (BNS), 2023, along with Sections 3, 4, 180 and 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Zaki K Hussain of Agacaim Police Station.
