With the central government enforcing strict Janata Curfew for three weeks and Goa sealing its borders with Maharashtra and Karnataka, the task of the government officials posted at Polem check post is cut out as many people from the northern district of Karnataka try to sneak in to Goan for different reasons, though.
After the closure of all liquor stores in Goa, the difference in rates of fuel due to varying taxation is the single most factor for the people living in and around Karwar taluka in trying to cross the border.
With Karnataka till Wednesday morning reporting a total of 46 COVID-19 cases, the Polem check post has gained importance in the efforts of the State government to stop entry of people through this point.
The authorities have taken the issue so seriously that the check post is now manned by additional police personnel with the Canacona PI personally supervising the implementation of government order.
Fernandes said that his visit to the Polem check post was necessitated as there were some rumours on social media that police personnel at Polem check post were allegedly allowing some vehicles to cross into Goan territory.
“In view of the dangers of spread of COVID-19, I met the Canacona police inspector and other staff of the different government offices at the check post and appreciated their efforts in containment and eradication of the most dreaded disease to affect mankind in recent times,” he said.
“I will look after the needs of the government staff,” he said.
