EDC staff panic, run for life as lift catches fire

PANJIM: Smoke coming out from one of the lifts of the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) building in the city created panic among its occupants on Friday.

Most of the staff working in the EDC building used staircase and ran out to safety as the alarm bell rang.

The Fire and Emergency Services official told O Heraldo that a call was received from EDC at around 11.30 am that smoke was billowing out from one of the lifts.

“We rushed to the spot and found that the smoke was coming out as the control panel of the lifts had a short circuit,” the official said.

No one was in the lift when the incident occurred, he said.

The company, which maintains the lift, had been informed about the incident, the official said.

The EDC officials claimed to have suffered a loss of Rs 30,000 due to the incident, he added.
