Elderly asked to keep pets for safety

PANJIM: In a bid to ensure safety of senior citizens, particularly those living alone, Goa police have advised them to own pets to maintain a watchful eye on strangers approaching their home or suspicious movements.

A list of safety precaution including do’s and don’ts were spelt out a during a safety review meeting of policing arrangements for them.
In two separate meetings held by Panjim and Agassaim police, senior citizens have also been advised to install home invasion prevention system and remain in constant touch with the respective beat police and their neighbours.
The Panjim police’s list includes ensuring doors and windows are fitted with iron grills and auto lock, using safety latch to the door and looking through magic door before opening the door, keeping a dog, installing burglary alarm and being in a group during morning and/or evening walks.
The meeting addressed by PI Siddhant Shirodkar also recommended maintaining important telephone numbers to dial during emergencies. Similarly, the elderly have been asked to check the particulars of persons called for plumbing, electrical works.
They have also been strictly asked not to keep valuables at home and also to keep strangers and servants away from family and property discussions. “Ensure complete verification of the servants by contacting the nearest police station. Do not allow servants’ visitors to the house. Likewise, expensive house articles and cupboards should not be given into the custody of servants,” the advisory reads.
At Agassaim PI Jivba Jalvi addressed the meeting and senior citizens were told about using the toll free helpline for senior citizens 20190 for immediate relief. Out of 20 senior citizens staying alone in different parts of Agassaim police station area, 10 attended the meeting.
