Elvis joins Congress

PANJIM: Former State convener of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Elvis Gomes joined the Congress on Sunday.

Unlike the recent development in South Goa where Velim former MLA Benjamin Silva joined Congress amidst high drama and protests from locals of Velim constituency, in this case, Elvis joined the party at Congress’ headquarters in Panjim in the presence of Cuncolim leaders including Yuri Alemao who welcomed the former bureaucrat.

It may be recalled that Gomes, who was AAP’s Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2017 assembly elections, had contested from Cuncolim.

Gomes had also unsuccessfully contested the last Lok Sabha elections from South Goa as AAP candidate. He had resigned from the party a couple of months ago, hitting out at the direction AAP has taken lately.

Earlier on Sunday evening, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar praised Gomes’ entry into the party in the presence of other senior Congress leaders including Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat and others.

Chodankar said there are many more leaders from other political outfits and political parties like AAP who will be joining the Congress in the days to come.

He said the public of Goa is looking at Congress as the party which wishes to form the next government as they are fed up with the corrupt and inefficient BJP government.

The Congress leaders displayed a show of unity with the entry of Gomes into the party.

Kamat said only the High Command can decide as to who gets a ticket but the fact that so many people want to join the Congress is a good indication of the people’s faith in the party.

Gomes said, “Congress is the only party which understands the feelings of Goans.”
