PANJIM: Expressing concern over rising unemployment, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Saturday said that “even God cannot provide government jobs to all, even if he wished to do so…even if be becomes the CM”.
During an online interaction with panchayat representatives on the ambitious ‘Swayampurna Goa’ outreach initiative, Sawant said, “Everyone wants government jobs. But that is not possible. Tomorrow even if God becomes the CM, it is not possible. Even if God wishes to do so…it is not possible.”

“I am aware of the unemployment issue and for that we have come up with a Swayampurna Goem concept. Under this, we want that unemployed households should have Rs 8,000-Rs 10,000 income per month,” he added.
Under the ambitious initiative, which is part of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the government has appointed several gazetted officers from Goa Civil Service as ‘Swayampurna Mitra’, who would be deployed across all 191 village panchayats every Saturday and audit the ground-level implementation of State schemes, prepare a comprehensive document on village resources, and put forth suggestions to make villages self-reliant.
“There are so many jobs in Goa which outsiders get cracking on… our Swayampurna Mitras will also coordinate works like arranging suitable minor jobs for the rural unemployed,” Sawant said.
The government has identified 15 parameters which will be used to evaluate villages. Sawant said that 80 schemes, proposed under Atmanirbhar Bharat, would be implemented across all villages, to make them self-sufficient.
“Goa is dependent on everything from other States. Milk, eggs, vegetables, rice, flowers, everything comes from different parts of the country. It’s time that we become self-reliant in this,” he said adding, “It is very important to outline a road map to make Goa self-sufficient over next three years.”
The Chief Minister also said that ministers and department secretaries will visit panchayats as part of the initiative.
