MARGAO/PONDA: The Excise Department on Monday sealed 38 wine stores in Margao town out of the 68 stores across Salcete Taluka.

Police at all the “nakabandi” spots were seen asking people to wear their seatbelts and also issued challans for those not wearing helmets.

Meanwhile, 12 premises of wholesalers were sealed in Ponda Taluka following an order from Excise Department as preventive measure during the lockdown.

Meanwhile, industries in the taluka will commence operations from Tuesday onwards while the government offices on Monday operated with skeletal staff to clear department-related works. However, on account of restrictions and no bus service, people could not report for duty for work.

The industrial estates at Marcaim, Kundaim, Bethora and other parts of Ponda reopened but the production will commence from Tuesday with limited staff to maintain social distancing, informed the sources in industrial estates.

However, the process of issuing identity cards to the workers commenced on Monday. With no private buses several labourers could not reach their workplace.

Many pharmaceutical units are operating in the estates. Ponda Police and traffic cops issued challans to the lockdown violators especially those commuting on vehicles and moving in public places without masks.

Most labourers in Ponda who gathered at KTC bus stand in search of jobs were left disappointed as few contractors turned up to take them for work.

Some NGOs and social workers who are providing free food to labourers however are facing shortage of cash to feed the labourers. Some are managing to feed these labourers due to public donations. The NGOs said if these donations stopped they will have to close the service any moment.
