Exposition: VP angry at being bypassed

OLD GOA: The Exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier ended last month, but the debate on the manner it was conducted, by keeping the panchayat authorities in the dark, lingers, as was apparent at the gram sabha.

Raking up the issue, former sarpanch Nilkant Bhomkar said many decisions were taken by the government without consulting the local panchayat.
“The mobile tower was installed without taking any approval from the local body while vendors were removed without the knowledge of the panchayat,” he said.
“It is the duty of the sarpanch to object to and bring these to the notice of the affected locals,” he said.
Sarpanch Prakash Amonkar said that though he was a member of the Exposition Committee, majority of the decisions were taken by the Exposition Secretariat comprising the four commissioners.
“I was called for a meeting of the committee only once,” he said. The villagers expressed surprise that the panchayat had been sidelined. “In earlier expositions, the panchayat was fully participative in the decision-making process,” they said.
