It’s a week now since the Municipal Chief Officer Naveen S L, had imposed the fine on the erring resident for dumping the waste brought from Salcete starred hotels. Sources in the Municipality said it took around 10 days for the Civic body to clear the waste, raising questions whether the fine amount was adequate enough to offset the expenses incurred to clear the garbage. It is learnt that municipal trucks made over 30 trips from the dumping site to the Sonsodo yard as part of the clearance exercise, though the accused person has agreed to bear expenses of the heavy earth moving machinery to clear the waste.
A Civic official admitted that the Municipality ought to have levied a hefty fine taking into account the amount of garbage dumped at Chovoth. “If the accused is allowed to get away with the nuisance by paying a fine, than it will not act as a deterrent but will only encourage miscreants to bring coastal waste into Margao by paying fines,” a Civic official said.
