A case of counterfeit currency has been registered in Porvorim after seven fake ₹500 notes, amounting to ₹3,500, were deposited through a cash deposit machine (CDM) at an HDFC Bank branch earlier this month.
According to police, all seven notes bore identical serial numbers, raising suspicion during verification. The incident reportedly took place on March 5, while the offence was formally registered on March 20 following a complaint filed by the branch manager.
The accused has been identified as Maibuba (46), a resident of Bijapur. Authorities have booked her under relevant sections pertaining to counterfeit currency.
Police have initiated further investigation to trace the source of the fake notes and determine whether a larger network may be involved.
