CANACONA: A one day Farmers Mela-Cum-Training was held at Shristhal, recently. The mela was inaugurated by Deputy Chief Minister and Agricultural Minister Chandrakant Babu Kavalekar in the presence of local MLA and Deputy Speaker Isidore Fernandes. The mela was held under the scheme of “Soil Testing and Atmanirbhar Bharat Swayampurna Goa”.
On the occasion, Deputy Speaker lauded the efforts of the agricultural minister and the officers of Agricultural Department for formulating and initiating new schemes to help farmers’ double their income.
Fernandes brought to the notice of the minister the difficulties faced by the farming community in Canacona while selling their agricultural produce.
He stressed on the creation of infrastructure in which the farmers don’t have to sit by the roadside or move in the village with the basket of vegetables on head to sell their produce.
“It’s time to build central market so that the farmers can sell their produce and buyers can get all types of vegetables and fruits at one place,” Fernandes added.
Deputy Chief Minister and Agricultural Minister Kavalekar said that the farmers have to go for mechanisation in their farms and apart from going for value addition to their products they have to go for organic cultivation practices to command a premium rate for their produce.
Those present were Krushi vignyan Coordinator Chandras Desai, ATMA South Goa incharge Shivram Naikgaonkar, Canacona ZAO Kirthiraj Naikgaonkar, Zilla Panchayat member of Khola Shanu Velip, Sarpanchas Daya Gaonkar, Suman Gaonkar and others.
