MARGAO, JUNE 30
Residents of Fatorda under the banner of Fatorda Residents Welfare Association on Wednesday protested against the dumping of commercial waste at Chandrawado near the Arlem road junction along the Eastern bypass.
Led by Association President Joseph Silva, the residents claimed that tons of waste is dumped and burnt at the site by a some unscrupulous commercial establishments, thereby posing health hazard to the locals.
He demanded an immediate stop to the illegal activity or warned of an agitation at the site. The residents had invited Traffic Cell incharge, PI Prabodh Shirwaikar and Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho to take a look at the non-biodegradable waste at the road junction.
Silva said waste is dumped on the road causing nuisance to the vehicles and public alike despite complaints to the Margao Municipal sanitary inspector.
“No action is being taken by the Margao Municipal authorities, since the road is partly acquired by the garbage and becomes very difficult for the vehicle to move on the busy road”, he added.
Silva warned the Margao Municipal authorities and the MMC Chairperson to take the matter very seriously and initiate legal action on the commercial establishment to stop waste dumping on the public road.
The residents also asked the Traffic police to stop parking of vehicles on both sides of the road.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho assured the residents that the Civic body would serve notices on the commercial establishments to stop forthwith waste dumping at the site.
He said that waste is also being burnt at the site by the commercial establishments making it difficult for the Civic workers to lift the waste.
He said the Civic body would crack a whip against the establishments for dumping non-biodegradable waste along the road side.
