FDA: Nothing to show formalin is a poison

Advocate says there are no reports of experts showing there is formalin in fish

MARGAO: The advocate of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) in the formalin-laced fish has submitted to the court that there is nothing to show that formalin is a poison and its presence in the fish.
The arguments were held on Thursday at the JMFC court in Margao. The advocate appointed by the Food and Drugs Administration in the case maintained that there are no reports of experts showing there is formalin in fish. They have also maintained that there is nothing to prove that formalin is a poison. Special Public Prosecutor Adv. Prasad Kirtani said, “From July 16 when the report of the official Iva came till today fish is being brought in Goa. There have been various reports, nothing has happened,” said Kirtani. “The petitioner has not shown any expert reports to show the presence of formalin,” said Kirtani.
The petitioner in the case, Adv Rajeev Gomes said it is surprising that the advocate says that there is nothing to show the presence of formalin and also argued that I am not an expert to say that formalin is poison.
“Why the authorities are trying to defend the criminals who are 17 operators of a truck who brought it,” said  Gomes.
“People are not going to fish markets due to fear of formalin laced fish,” he said.
