Feast fair:Old Market circle turns chaotic
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, MAY 31
Old Market circle turned chaotic on Sunday evening as thousands of shoppers thronged the Holy Spirit feast fair, with the traffic cops unable to man the peak hour traffic at the entrance to the city.
No doubt, most of the hawkers erected their stalls well beyond the footpaths, but the heavy rush of shoppers, eager to make provision for the monsoon, threw traffic out of gear.
Long serpentine queue of vehicles were seen on the four roads leading to the Colva circle, especially this evening.
Questions were raised why the police higher ups did not beef up their strength at the old market junction to meet the requirements. The absence of Margao Municipal inspectors in strength also delayed cracking a whip against some unscrupulous vendors from coming close on the footpaths.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho admitted that the fair led to traffic snarls at the old market circle and expressed confidence that the situation will be streamlined in the next two days.
He said the Civic body was successful in keeping the footpaths free for the movement of pedestrians, but hastened to add that congestion is bound to take place when thousands of people throng to any place for shopping.
