The Margao Municipal Council has asked medical institutions and practitioners to immediately fill up forms relating to the generation of bio-medical waste by January 27 or face strict action, including closure of the defaulting institution.
In an appeal to the medical practitioners, dispensaries, clinics, dental clinics, hospital and nursing homes, pathological laboratories, blood banks, veterinary institutions, the civic body has said the information is required to design the modules and time schedule for collection, transportation and disposal of the medical waste.
The civic body says the bio-medical waste generated within the Margao Municipal jurisdiction will be collected in accordance with the bio-medical waste management and handling Rules 1998, from February 1 as a short-term measures.
In this connection, the Council intends to collect the waste directly from the institution by engaging a separate vehicle along with a driver, a supervisor and workers, exclusively for the collection of the bio-medical waste.
Chairperson Savio Coutinho said the waste will be duly segregated in accordance with the Bio-Medical Waste Management and Handling Rules 1998 and the same will be pretreated with the hypochlorite solutions and delivered in the assigned container for safe handling of the waste.
