PANJIM, SEPT 19
Sri Lankan filmmaker Sumitra Peries was injured when she slipped at Dona Paula jetty, today morning. The legendary film artist hit her head on the ground and sprained her leg.
Peries is in Goa to participate in the four-day South Asian Film Festival, which started on Friday. “I had been for a sight-seeing when I had a fall. It could have been a major mishap but God was on our side,” she said during a seminar ‘Our Cinema Global Cinema’ today evening.
She was immediately rushed to a private hospital where she was given medical-aid and discharged soon. The 75-year-old Peries got emotional when she said that people around there were concerned after the mishap.
“When I met with the accident everybody turned up there to see me. This shows there are really no borders,” said the country’s first filmmaker.
Known to be the grandmother of Sri Lankan Cinema, Peries was Sri Lanka’s ambassador to France in 1990s and has won several international awards for her films all around the world.
