Except for a few door-to-door visits, campaigning is yet to pick up momentum for the ensuing municipal polls in Sanguem.
There was an initial interest among probable candidates who were seen personally meeting voters in their respective wards to garner support.
However, these candidates have gone slow on their campaign, mainly because they are unsure which seats are to be reserved for the Scheduled Caste and Schedule Tribes.
“The government has failed to declare the seats which will be reserved for Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes,” said Deepak Marathe, one of the probable candidates.
“As long as the government does not declare which seats will be reserved for SC/ST, we cannot go for campaigning in full swing.”
“All our hard work in the ward will be wasted if the particular ward is declared as reserved,” Marathe added.
While elections are normally considered a time for partying by the youth, candidates are yet to start “treating” the youth and their supporters at the various bars and taverns in the municipality.
It is also learnt that candidates likely to be in fray are also yet to spend lavishly.
“The elections to be still way ahead and these parties and treats will start only at the eleventh hour,” a prospective candidate told Herald.
Added Ravindra Naik, another probable candidate from Sanguem: “Spending lavishly at this stage will have no effect and it will only cause the candidates to drain their pockets before the elections actually draws close.”
Rumours are afoot in Sanguem that some probable candidates are planning to sponsor items to garner support from the youth section of the voters.
