Govt will appoint officials under Goa Biodegradable Control Act to book those littering

PANJIM: The Goa government has now set December 15 as the date to launch its pilot project for imposing fines on persons found littering in Panjim and Cansaulim areas, which have been identified for dry waste collection. Persons would be fined between Rs 1,000 and 5,000 for littering.
The government will appoint officials under the Goa Biodegradable Control Act, 1966, to book those found littering. The Act empowers collectors, deputy collectors, excise inspectors, mamlatdars, joint mamlatdars, block development officers (BDOs), among others, to levy the fine.
Government had earlier fixed November 15 to launch the project, which was later postponed due to delay in
finalizing the contractor. Also, senior officials of Goa State Pollution Control Board including its Member Secretary Levinson Martins were away on an official trip
to Europe. Martins would
be back in Goa on November 25.
North Goa Collector Mihir Vardhan said that the drive would begin from December 15. “It’s a pilot project and would continue for a month. If the experiment is successful, then it will be implemented in other villages and towns across the state,” Vardhan said.
The decision was taken during the state monitoring committee on solid waste management meeting held in October.
