Fiona Mackeown, the mother of British teenager Scarlet Eden Keeling, is ready to arrive in India to assist the court in the prosecution as the United Kingdom court has suspended her sentence for two years, her lawyer said.
“Fiona is ready to come to India and assist the court as soon as a date for her deposition is fixed,” her lawyer Vikram Varma told Press Trust of India.
Fiona’s presence for the trial was uncertain after she was sentenced for eight months imprisonment for alleged benefit fraud.
Varma said that the British court has suspended her sentence for two years and has not barred her from visiting India.
The Goa Children’s Court is hearing the sensational Scarlet death case.
Scarlet was found dead at the Anjuna shore on Feb 18, 2008. Two locals – Samson D’Souza and Placido Carvalho, are booked for drugging, sexually abusing and leaving her to die on the beach.
The court  which is now on vacation is hearing the case three times a week. The case proceedings will begin in the first week of June after the court meets post-vacation.
Varma said that Fiona’s testimony is very crucial in this case. “She was supposed to arrive in India on April 15 but had to cancel her trip as cyclonic ash had jeoparadised the entire air travel in United Kingdom,” he said.
